Manual vs. Automated Temperature Screening

manual vs automated temperature screening

You realize your company’s need for temperature screening. Now, to determine how you’ll implement it…

The first step to solving a problem is admitting that the problem exists. Hopefully, the benefits of temperature screening for your employees, as well as your customers, has been fully realized. Fantastic! You’re on your way to being back in business. The question remains on how to safely and efficiently screen hundreds (if not thousands) of people. Let’s look at the two most popular approaches.

1. Human-Conducted Temperature Screening

The most common temperature screening method is perhaps the most straightforward— assigning a screening specialist at the entry of an office, school, place of business, or medical facility to manually take the temperatures of individuals before they enter with contact-free infrared thermometers. These individuals may be the facility’s health specialists, existing employees, or people hired specifically for this role. Due to their close interaction with others, they will usually don necessary personal protective equipment (PPE), including a face mask, gloves, and possibly eye protection. Pros:

  • With an individual present for the screenings, there’s very little confusion by visitors.
  • Rescreenings are simple in the case of thermometer malfunction, human error, or temperature interference.
  • Screeners can submit visitor feedback to superiors, albeit manually.
  • Equipment is relatively inexpensive in comparison to automated screening devices.

Cons:

  • This position requires hiring an additional employee or reassigning an existing employee to this role.
  • This role requires guidance and logistical management to accommodate worker schedules, breaks, etc.
  • The close proximity requirements for infrared thermometers place screeners at risk of Coronavirus transmission from infected persons.

2. Automated Temperature Screening Devices

Many businesses, schools, and healthcare facilities have begun to trust their temperature monitoring to a growing number of automated thermometer devices. Either mounted on a nearby wall or resting on a kiosk-like stand, these devices allow visitors to screen themselves using mounted contact-free infrared thermometer capabilities. Visitors step forward to the device which automatically detects their presence and provides necessary instructions to commence a bodily temperature check of the wrist or forehead. Some models can also detect the presence of a protective face mask to enforce mask-wearing protocols. Some models can send images of faces of those scanned to managers or HR specialists for office settings.      Pros:

  • Automated temperature screening devices do not require hiring additional employees or reallocating existing staff resources.
  • Devices keep existing staff at a safe distance from possibly infected visitors.
  • Screenings are immensely accurate due to a reduced likelihood of human error.
  • Many devices can automatically submit information to superiors, HR professionals, or authorities.

Cons:

  • Automated temperature screening devices are substantially more expensive than hand-held infrared thermometers.
  • Devices require initial installation and may require occasional maintenance and/or software updates.
  • Automated temperature screeners may still require a certain degree of staff supervision to ensure visitors screen themselves properly.

Not Better or Worse, Just Different

For some businesses, schools, healthcare facilities, or workplaces, one of these temperature screening options may be better suited over its alternative approach. A favorite eatery may prefer the automated device to foster a less intrusive feel. A hospital may prefer their screening processes to be conducted by medical professionals. Either way, every location should carefully consider which direction will be most beneficial for their temperature screening needs.
